Apple Inc. says its upcoming iOS 11 upgrade for iPhones and iPad tablets will include the capability to temporarily block alerts for incoming text messages and social media websites while the device is in a moving vehicle.
The app taps information from nearby wi-fi networks and a vehicle’s Bluetooth connection to detect when a device is in a moving vehicle, then renders certain functions inoperable. Users can unblock emergency contact numbers or choose to override the system altogether.
The so-called “Do Not Disturb While Driving” app sends an auto-reply to incoming text messages to inform contacts the user is driving. Apple says the system isn’t necessary in vehicles equipped with the tech company’s CarPlay smartphone interface, which automatically converts texts to audio.
The free update will be available this autumn for the iPhone 5s and newer models.
Earlier this month Nissan Motor Co. said it’s developing a “signal shield” box that uses a conductive woven metal mesh to block signals from reaching a cell phone. Cynics note that occupants also could simply turn their phones off or ignore them when they’re in a vehicle.
