Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti arm will unveil an updated version of its QX50 crossover concept next week at the Detroit auto show. The midsize model will include self-driving technologies and a production-ready version of the carmaker’s variable compression ratio (VCR) engine.

Infiniti says the QX50 Concept, which builds on the QX Sport Inspiration concept unveiled at last year’s Beijing auto show, previews the brand's automated driving technologies that will debut in unnamed future vehicles.

The carmaker describes the system as functioning like a “co-pilot for the driver,” taking over some control during highway driving and identifying and monitoring the positions of nearby vehicles and other objects. The features are designed to enhance driver engagement with the operator retaining “ultimate control” of the vehicle, according to the company.

The 2.0-liter variable compression ratio engine, which Infiniti calls VC-Turbo, combines the performance of a gasoline-powered V-6 with the fuel-efficiency of a 2.0-liter diesel, according to the carmaker. It says the QX50 concept, the system produces 268 hp and 288 lb-ft of torque while providing a 27% fuel efficiency improvement over similarly rate V-6 engines.
