Mumbai-based Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. says it will idle its SUV factories in India for as many as eight days this month to ease the buildup of its unsold vehicles.

Mahindra is suffering from India's shrinking car market and the government's 3-point hike to 30% in the tax that carmakers must pay on SUVs.

The company's sales of passenger vehicles dropped 13% year over year to 17,200 units last month and 2% to 60,200 units over the past three months.
