Factory shipments of passenger vehicles in India rose 8% to 285,500 units in January, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Growth was led by a 38% jump to 85,900 units for SUV/crossovers. Wholesales of conventional cars slipped 1% to 184,300 units. SIAM says domestic shipments of commercial trucks and buses surged 40% to 85,700 units last month.

The trade group predicts demand for passenger vehicles will rise 9% in the fiscal year that ends March 31. Volume through the first 10 months of the period climbed 8% to 2.71 million units.​​​​​​
