Ignition Interlock “Safe” Curbs Cell Phone Use by Drivers
A new ignition interlock system prevents drivers from texting at the wheel by requiring them to "dock" their phones before starting the engine.
A new ignition interlock system prevents drivers from texting at the wheel by requiring them to "dock" their phones before starting the engine.
The OrigoSafe allows use of the phone's Bluetooth features, including hands-free calling and routing music through the vehicle's audio system.
If the driver removes the phone after the engine is running, lights flash and a continuing alarm sounds. Repeated attempts to defeat the interlock causes the system to prevent an engine restart without intervention by an administrator.
Valets and service technicians can operate an OrigoSafe-equipped vehicle for a few minutes by entering a code number. A separate code enables the vehicle to be driven for longer periods under emergency conditions.
Roanoke, Va.-based developer Origo sees two big markets for its $279 system: parents of teen drivers and fleet operators. The interlock currently can accept iPhones and the Samsung Galaxy S3. The company says adapters for other phones are being developed.
