Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing two U.S. recalls to fix problems with hood latches and parking brake warning lights in nearly 600,000 cars and SUVs.
The company will call back 437,400 of its 2013-2017 model Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport SUVs to replace a release cable for the hood’s secondary latch. The cable may corrode and jam, preventing the safety latch from engaging. In that case, the hood could fly open if the main latch wasn’t secured and the vehicle is moving.
A second recall will cover 161,100 of Hyundai’s 2015-2016 model Sonata and Genesis sedans. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a corrosion-prone switch could prevent the parking brake warning light from illuminating when it should.
If the switch fails, the car could be inadvertently driven with its brake on. Driving under those conditions would hurt fuel economy, overheat the rear brakes and cause premature wear to the brake system.
NHTSA says Hyundai intends to begin both recall campaigns on June 30.
