Hyundai Motor Co. will offer a continuously variable transmission in the 2020 Elantra compact car.

The CVT is expected to replace the 6-speed automatic transmission offered in the current Elantra. The 2019 model also gives buyers the choice of a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Paired with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, the CVT-equipped Elantra has a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rating of 35 mpg. That’s the same rating as the 2019 Kia Forte with a CVT.

Other engine options, including the current 1.6-liter turbo four-banger, also are expected for the Elantra. However, the Elantra Eco with a 1.4-liter engine and dual-clutch 7-speed could be dropped because the new CVT model provides the same fuel efficiency, Autoblog notes.
