Honda Motor Co. plans to expand installations of its compact hydrogen fueling system in Japan from 15 to 100 by 2020.

The company unveiled its Smart Hydrogen Station design in 2014. The system uses solar power or other renewable energy sources to extract hydrogen from water on site. The updated design also compresses the hydrogen without using a mechanical compressor.

Honda says its fueling station can pump enough hydrogen in three minutes to power a fuel cell car for 750 km (460 miles). The company also claims its unit can be installed for about 70 million yen ($624,000), or roughly one-fifth the cost of a conventional hydrogen station.
