Honda Motor Co. has released photos of the new HR-V subcompact crossover it will introduce in the American market late this year.

The vehicle, which will use the same global platform that carries Honda's redesigned 2015 model Fit five-door mini-hatch, will be produced at the company's new $800 million factory Celaya, Mexico. The HR-V will fit into Honda's U.S. lineup below the $24,000 CR-V small crossover.

Honda has released no other details about the crossover except to say it will be equipped with the Fit's "magic seat" system that permits multiple seating configurations. The new model will compete with such upcoming rivals as the Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade.

The HR-V is expected to use the updated 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine that will drive the front wheels of the $15,500 Fit. The powerplant makes 130 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque and will be mated to a 6-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. The latter configuration will deliver a combined U.S. city/highway fuel economy rating of 36 mpg.
