Honda Motor Co. has begun making its new 10-speed automatic transmission at the company’s plant in Tallapoosa, Ga.

To support the program, Honda invested $100 million for a new assembly line in Tallapoosa. It also spent about $50 million to upgrade and increase capacity at its Russells Point, Ohio, transmission parts facility.

The 10-speed gearbox will debut this spring in higher trim levels of the 2018 Odyssey minivan. Other Honda and Acura models will offer the transmission later.

Compared with a 6-speed automatic, the 10-speed unit provides a 6% improvement in fuel economy, according to Honda. The new transmission also boasts quicker acceleration, faster shifts and less noise.
