Honda Motor Co. has terminated production of its Civic car in India and has not disclosed plans to build the next-generation model that was launched in the U.S. in spring 2011.
The Civic has long been among Honda's highest-selling models worldwide. But the company has sold only about 50,000 Civics in India since the car's launch there in 2006.
Civic volume in the country dropped to 690 cars in the 2012-13 fiscal year. The model competes in India's shrinking D-segment, where sales dropped 29% to 19,200 units in the same period.
The Civic also is hampered by the lack of a diesel-powered version in a market that seen strong shift towards diesel variants in last several years.
