Honda Motor Co. will launch a roomier and more upscale all-new Odyssey minivan in Japan this month.

The fifth-generation Odyssey and Odyssey Absolute models feature completely new platforms and powertrains with improvements in ride quality, fuel economy, exterior styling, interior roominess, utility and safety, according to Honda.

The new model features an ultra-low load floor and a higher ceiling than the previous model. The exterior eschews the Odyssey's trademark "lightning bolt" zigzag character line in favor of a cleaner appearance.

The single engine for the Japanese market launch is a 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC I-4 that produces 158 hp-197 hp depending on the configuration. Front- and all-wheel drive are available, along with a carryover 5-speed automatic transmission and new continuously variable transmission that mimics a 7-speed gearbox.

Advanced safety features include a road hazard detection system and collision mitigation braking. Among the convenience upgrades are active cruise control and parking assistance.

The starting price for the new Odyssey in Japan is 3,000,000 yen ($30,500). The new vehicle arrives in the U.S. in mid-2016 as a 2017 model.
