Honda Motor Co. is telling suppliers in Japan it wants to expand its list of components that can be shared across multiple vehicle platforms, The Nikkei reports.

The newspaper says the company will first apply the new policy to parts being developed for the next-generation Civic small sedan due in 2020.

Honda met with more than 300 suppliers on Tuesday to review its purchasing policy for the first time in eight years. Sources tell The Nikkei the company wants to expand its partnership with key suppliers to develop proprietary technology and better standardize technology across multiple models.
