Honda Motor Co. expects American sales of its namesake and Acura brands this year to surpass the company record of 1.55 million vehicles set in 2007. Honda's U.S. volume jumped 24% to 1.42 million units in 2012.
CEO Takanobu Ito is counting on the recent redesign of the company's three highest-selling models in America: the Civic compact, Accord midsize sedan and CR-V company crossover vehicle. He notes that the company's North American capacity grew to a record 1.69 million vehicles last year.
Ito predicts Honda's U.S. sales will increase again in 2014 when the company will introduce the next-generation Fit subcompact car and a new small crossover. Those two models will be built at the company's new plant in Celaya, Mexico. He says Honda has deliberately limited sales of the current Japan-made Fit because the strong yen has hobbled the car's profitability.
