James Kim has resigned as CEO of GM Korea to spend full time as head of the American Chamber of Commerce of Korea.

Kim, who has led the General Motors Co. unit for the past 18 months, will relinquish his post on Aug. 31. He has been serving as chair of the chamber since he joined GM. The carmaker has not yet announced Kim’s successor.

GM operates four assembly plants in Korea since acquiring most of them from bankrupt Daewoo Motor Co. in 2002. The resulting GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. was renamed GM Korea Co. in 2011. The unit supplies many GM small cars worldwide. But it has been burdened with excess capacity since the American carmaker decided in 2013 to drop the Chevrolet brand in Europe.

GM's deal in March to sell its Adam Opel unit to PSA Group for €2.2 billion ($2.5 billion) has prompted speculation that GM also may be reviewing the future of its operations in Korea.
