Harman International Industries Inc. is making an undisclosed investment in Navdy Inc., a San Francisco-based startup that specializes in connected head-up display systems.
Navdy recently launched its self-named aftermarket system. The $800 device, which plugs into a vehicle’s on-board diagnostics port, is mounted on the dashboard and projects vehicle information to appear ahead of the windshield.
The Navdy system also can be linked with a user’s smartphone, allowing drivers to view navigation directions, incoming messages, song titles and other information while keeping their eyes on the road. A steering wheel-mounted rotary dial is used to scroll through menus. Future enhancements will allow for some voice-activated and gesture commands.
Navdy, which was founded four years ago, says it has received 17,000 orders since launching the HUD system this autumn. The company has raised about $42 million from investors, which include chip giant Qualcomm Inc. and several venture capital firms in addition to Harman.
Starting next month, Harman plans to offer Navdy’s HUD system directly to carmakers. It also will expand availability through specialty auto shops, audio retailers and select mobile carriers.
Harman, which was acquired by Samsung Electronics Co. last month, plans to integrate some of its own software and hardware technology with the Navdy system in coming years. This could include noise cancellation, high-tech microphones and audio-boosting algorithms.
