Hangzhou is the sixth big city in China to sharply curtail local car sales in a bid to control air pollution and traffic congestion, Bloomberg News reports.
The city has announced it will issue only 80,000 new vehicle license plates per year compared with a record 276,000 tags in 2013. Hangzhou will dispense 80% of available plates by lottery and auction off the rest.
The municipality notes that rush-hour traffic in Hangzhou has slowed to an average 12 mph.
