General Motors Co. says it has received 100 death and 184 injury claims so far from families who say they were victimized by defective GM ignition switches.
The company is offering at least $1 million to families of those who died in crashes caused by the switches, plus $300,000 to each surviving spouse and dependent. Claimants must prove the switch was at fault, mainly by providing evidence that the car's airbags failed to deploy.
GM will take claims through the end of this year. It expects to pay legitimate claims 3-4 months after receiving them.
