General Motors Co.’s GMC unit is launching new off-road AT4 badging with a special version of its Sierra pickup truck.

The company unveiled the 2019 Sierra AT4 on Monday night ahead of this week’s New York auto show. AT4 (for All Terrain 4-wheel drive) variants of every GMC model will be added over the next two years.

GMC hails the new Sierra AT4 as the most premium, off-road capable Sierra ever. Sales are due to start this autumn.

The base Sierra AT4 will be powered by a 5.3-liter V-8 engine mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Other engine choices include a 6.2-liter V-8 and 3.0-liter inline-six diesel, both of which are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The V-8 engines feature stop-start technology and GM's Dynamic Fuel Management system that enables the engine to operate on one to eight cylinders as needed.

Four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case is standard as is a locking rear differential. The latter channels power to the rear wheels to enhance traction on slippery or uneven terrain.

The Sierra AT4 also gets a 2-inch factory-installed suspension lift, skid plates, off-road tuned Rancho monotube shock absorbers and 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. Other off-road features include hill-descent control and a traction-select system that allows drivers to choose from preset drive modes for different terrain and weather conditions.

The off-road pickup also comes with a multi-color head-up display, a rear-camera mirror and surround-vision that provides a bird’s-eye view for tight maneuvering. Exterior styling changes include a body-color grille surround and black chrome accents.

The six-function “MultiPro” tailgate that GMC announced earlier this month for the base Sierra will be available on the AT4 model. Buyers also will have the option of adding the lightweight carbon fiber pickup bed that is being introduced on the top-end GMC Denali package.
