General Motors Co. CEO Mary Barra has again cautioned that the company may launch more recalls as it continues to review records about possible problems with older models.
Last week Barra told a congressional panel that GM expected to announce all such recalls by the end of June. This week she told the Today television show that the company would "continue to look at the data," perhaps signaling that the process may extend farther into summer.
On Thursday GM did just that. It launched a recall of 33,000 of its 2013-2014 model Chevrolet Cruze sedans to replace a defective airbag inflator supplied by Takata Corp. GM faces a lawsuit from a woman who was blinded in one eye when the driver's airbag inflator in her Cruze exploded, spraying shrapnel into the vehicle.
GM already has recalled more than 20 million vehicles this year, mostly to fix flawed ignition switches that could be jostled out of the "run" position. But in an effort to clear its records of any lingering product issues, it also has launched smaller campaigns to fix everything from airbags and floor mats to hoses and wiring connectors.
