General Motors Co. and the U.S. Army are expanding their collaboration on hydrogen fuel cells.
GM is working with the Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren, Mich., to jointly evaluate the performance and durability of new hydrogen fuel cell-related materials and designs before assembling them into full-scale fuel-cell propulsion systems. The project is expected to continue for as long as five years.
Most of GM's fuel-cell work will be performed at the new Fuel Cell Development Laboratory the company is building in Pontiac, Mich.
GM and Honda Motor Co. are working separately under a partnership announced in July a deal to co-develop and commercialize next-generation fuel-cell systems and hydrogen storage technologies by 2020.
