General Motors Co. is preparing to ship medium and large pickup trucks from the U.S. to China next year.
The plan will involve an unspecified number of Chevrolet’s midsize Colorado and fullsize Silverado trucks, Automotive News reports. Each vehicle will face a 25% import tariff when it arrives.
GM follows Ford Motor Co., which said in April it would begin shipping small volumes of its F-150 Raptor off-road pickup truck to China late this year. Nissan Motor Co. currently is the only global carmaker that builds pickups in China.
GM and Ford are testing China’s interest in pickup trucks, which are not big sellers in China. AN notes that China has lifted a widespread city ban on pickups in four provinces to help develop demand for domestically produced models.
