General Motors Co. plans recall 292,900 Chevrolet Cruze sedans from the 2011-2012 model years in the U.S. to repair a faulty switch that could intermittently cut off power assist to the brakes.

All affected cars are equipped with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicles were produced at GM's assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio.

GM blames 27 low-speed crashes none causing an injury on the brake switch failure, which forces the driver to unexpectedly apply stronger pedal pressure to stop the vehicle.
