General Motors Co. and its partners boosted wholesale deliveries in China 10% year over year to a record 816,400 vehicles in the first quarter of 2013.

That was enough to surpass Volkswagen AG, which led the country's sales in the three previous quarters. VW group volume jumped 21% to 769,200 vehicles in the January-March period.

GM outsold VW in China by about 30,000 units in 2012. That marked the U.S. company's eighth consecutive year as the country's top seller, a feat GM aims to repeat this year. China is the biggest national market for both companies.
