General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet unit will produce an unspecified but small number of Camaro rolling chassis built for drag racing.

The cars will sell for $55,000 each, sans powertrain. The company notes that Chevy's performance group offers crate engines, transmissions, electronics and other racing components to equip the cars for the strip.

The cars, all painted white, come with an NHRA-approved roll cage, racing chassis and suspension components. Each vehicle will be shod with Hoosier tires mounted on Bogart racing wheels.

Inside, the cars will be equipped with racing seats and switch panel. Production-type equipment includes window glass, headlamps, tail lamps door panels, headliner, carpet, instrument panel and steering wheel.

Chevy will begin taking orders for the numbered, hand-built chassis on Thursday through a call center (800-306-3005). Customers will get a purchase certificate, complete the deal through a Chevy dealer and must take delivery in the metro Detroit area.

The chassis will be numbered but won't be assigned a VIN and cannot be titled or driven on the street.
