General Motors Co. has nominated Joe Ashton, a vice president with the United Auto Workers union, to join its board of directors in June.

Ashton was suggested by the UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust. He intends to retire from the UAW in June and would begin his board term in August.

The UAW previously nominated former GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky to GM's board. He was elected a director in 2007 and has been nominated to remain on the board.

Both men will stand for election by shareholders at GM's annual meeting on June 10.
