General Motors Co. has named Jeff Boyer to the newly created position of vice president of global vehicle safety, effective immediately.
Boyer's immediate task will be to oversee GM's efforts to restructure a system that ignored an ignition switch defect the company noticed more than a decade ago but failed to resolve until last month. The flaw, which has been linked to 12 fatalities, led to a recall of 1.6 million vehicles worldwide and has spawned numerous internal and external investigations.
"If there are any obstacles in his way, Jeff has the authority to clear them," declares CEO Mary Barra. "If he needs any additional resources, he will get them."
Boyer will oversee all GM product recalls. He also will have worldwide responsibility for vehicle safety system development and validation. Boyer joined GM 40 years ago and has held several engineering, safety and process management positions with the company. He reports to John Calabrese, GM's head of global vehicle engineering.
