General Motors Co. has appointed Cathy Clegg, currently vice president of global manufacturing engineering, to vice president of North American manufacturing, effective July 1.

Clegg, who has held several management jobs in manufacturing at GM, succeeds Gerald Johnson, who took over as head of North American manufacturing a year ago. Johnson has been named to oversee GM's efforts to improve its process discipline and efficiency through the application of the Design for Six Sigma business system. He will report to CEO Mary Barra.

In her new role, Clegg will oversee 55 production facilities and 74,000 workers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. She currently is vice president of global manufacturing engineering, and previously was vice president of labor relations.

Succeeding Clegg is Kurt Wiese. He will relinquish his current position as executive director of global product development on July 1.
