General Motors Co. is standardizing a feature that will enable U.S. owners to use a smartphone to lock and unlock their vehicles' doors, start the engine, honk the horn or turn on the lights.

The so-called RemoteLink service will be active in 36 of its 2014 model Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles that are equipped with OnStar even if owners opt not to pay for OnStar's concierge services.

GM customers can add the feature to their phones by downloading a free OnStar app. They can use same app to tap into such fee-based services as navigational instructions, vehicle system monitoring and live access to OnStar advisors.

GM says it will offer the free remote lock/start application for five years beginning at vehicle delivery.

RemoteLink debuted in the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid in 2010. GM notes that the feature has since been made available as part of an OnStar subscription package for most GM models sold in the U.S.
