General Motors Co. will promote Alan Batey, vice president of U.S. sales and service, to the newly created job of worldwide head of the Chevrolet brand later this week, according to news reports.

Batey also has been GM's interim global chief marketing officer since the company fired Joel Ewanick last July. Before moving to the U.S. in 2010, Batey worked for GM in Australia, Germany, South Korea and the U.K.

CEO Dan Akerson said in November that he was seeking an executive with broad international experience to head Chevy. Cadillac and Chevrolet are the company's two global marques.

Bob Ferguson was named global vice president of Cadillac in October. The company recruited Volkswagen AG executive Tim Mahoney to become Chevy's global chief marketing officer in April.
