General Motors Co. may add production of the current version of its Opel Mokka subcompact crossover at its plant in Zaragoza, Spain, to meet strong demand for the model, Germany's Handelsblatt reports, citing unidentified company sources.
The model, which debuted in Europe last October, is currently built only at GM's factory in Bupyeong, South Korea. Opel said in March it will build the next-generation Mokka in Europe instead of Korea.
Adding Mokka production at the underutilized Zaragoza facility now could help Opel shrink its losses as well as long waiting lists for the vehicle, the newspaper notes. The Spanish plant currently makes the Corsa supermini and Meriva small MPV.
Opel says only that GM is seeking additional capacity for the Mokka. The Korean factory also builds the Chevrolet Trax, a Mokka variant. Chevy tells Reuters there are no plans to built the Trax elsewhere.
