General Motors Co. has hired Tony Cervone as senior vice president of global communications, effective immediately. He had been vice president of group communications for Volkswagen Group of America.
Cervone, 51, succeeds Selim Bingol, who left last month as GM's ignition switch recall scandal widened.
The new assignment marks Cervone's second tour of duty at GM. He first joined the company in 1999 after 14 years in various PR jobs at Chrysler Corp. At GM, he rose to become vice president of global communications strategy and operations.
Cervone left GM in 2009 a few months before the company filed for bankruptcy, becoming senior vice president at United Airlines. He moved to VW in 2011.
