General Motors Co. has retained disaster compensation expert Kenneth Feinberg to advise how the company should respond to families victimized by crashes involving GM's recalled ignition switches.
Feinberg says his mandate is to independently assess the companies options.
GM CEO Mary Barra announced his appointment on Tuesday during testimony before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee in Washington, D.C. She told the committee GM has not decided whether to set up a trust fund to compensate victims of the recalled vehicles, which have been linked to 12 fatalities.
Feinberg handled compensation issues related to the 9/11 attack, BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the Boston Marathon bombing.
