General Motors Co. is broadening its Maven car-share service to more than 80 vehicles in New York City.

The mobility brand, which was rolled out in Ann Arbor, Mich., in January 2016, already operates more than 500 vehicles in 17 cities in North America. GM figures each shared car in operation eliminates 15 privately owned vehicles, which typically side idle 95% of the time.

Maven’s primary car-share service enables users to rent vehicles on short notice by the hour or day. Renters use a smartphone app to reserve and access a vehicle. The business also offers two variants: a transportation service (Maven Home) for residential communities and on-demand rentals (Maven Gig) for independent drivers associated with such ride-hailing options as Lyft and Uber.
