The three contestants for car of the year are the Chevrolet Stingray sports car, Cadillac CTS luxury sport sedan and Mazda3 small sedan. Cadillac won in 2013 with its ATS luxury sedan.
Contenders for truck of the year are the Chevrolet Silverado, Jeep Cherokee and Acura MDX. Last year's winner was Chrysler's RAM 1500 pickup truck.
The NACTOY candidates were chosen by a panel of 48 journalists from an initial group of 23 cars and trucks. Candidate vehicles all were new or significantly redesigned for the 2013 model year.
The two winners for the 2014 award will be announced on Jan. 13 ahead of the Detroit auto show.
