General Motors Co. has officially opened its fourth and final information technology innovation center, a 17,000 sq-ft facility in Chandler, Ariz., that eventually will employ 1,000 people.

The center joins similar operations in Georgia, Michigan and Texas. GM located the facilities near 150 colleges and universities to gain access to more than 7,000 students majoring in information technology-related areas.

GM announced the IT centers initiative in 2012 as part an effort to boost its in-house IT services capabilities from 10% to 90% over three years. The project's stated goals are to double the speed of project delivery, triple the amount of innovation, add enterprise data centers and create an enterprise data warehouse.

CFO Randy Mott says the project, which includes "insourcing" 9,000 salaried employees, is more than 50% completed.
