General Motors Co. and its Chinese partners sold a record 276,100 vehicles in China in May compared with 252,800 a year earlier.

The 9% increase was led by a 16% jump to 135,900 vehicles for Shanghai GM. Sales by SAIC-GM-Wuling rose 5% to 136,600 units. Volume plunged 25% to 3,600 for truckmaker FAW-GM.

GM says Buick sales in China last month advanced 15% to 72,600 vehicles. Demand for Chevrolet brand cars grew 13% to 57,200 units. Cadillac sales zoomed 59% to 6,100.

Combined sales by GM's China ventures rose 11% to a record 1.47 million units in January-May.
