GM Brings Back Steve Harris to Guide PR
General Motors Co. has hired Steve Harris, who headed its corporate public relations during the company's bankruptcy, to help it deal with backlash from its recall of 2.6 million cars with defective ignition switches.
General Motors Co. has hired Steve Harris, who headed its corporate public relations during the company's bankruptcy, to help it deal with backlash from its recall of 2.6 million cars with defective ignition switches.
GM says Harris currently a partner with Arlington, Va.-based strategic consultants McGinn and Company will serve on a contract basis for an unspecified limited period.
The assignment will be his fourth stint with GM. Harris first joined the company as a lecturer in 1967. He later became head of product PR at American Motors and director of corporate PR at Chrysler.
He returned to GM in 1999 as vice president of global communications, retiring in 2003. Harris agreed to return in 2006 to again head GM's PR as the company slid into bankruptcy. He retired from the company a second time in 2009.
Harris' latest return comes three weeks after Selim Bingol left as GM's senior vice president of global communications and public policy. Bingol has not yet been replaced.
