General Motors Co. has renamed and added capabilities to its OnStar-based fleet management tool.
The new OnStar Vehicle Insights service replaces GM’s previous Commercial Link tool, which debuted in 2016. As with its predecessor, Vehicle Insights is compatible with 2015 or newer Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles.

The new system allows drivers to lock, unlock and remotely start their vehicles. Fleet managers also can track trip data, such as fuel economy, hard braking and excessive speeding.
These features are in addition to Commercial Link’s capabilities that tracked a vehicle’s location, fuel level and maintenance needs. Users also can use the data to generate reports, including charts and graphs detailing various expenses.
The added features increase pricing to $16 per vehicle per month for Vehicle Insights, compared with $10 per vehicle for Commercial Link.
Both services are targeted at businesses with small to medium fleets. GM provides similar tools to larger fleets through partnerships with third-party data providers.
In the future, GM plans to make Vehicle Insights compatible with vehicles from other carmakers to better serve multi-branded fleets.
