GKN Touts Improved All-Wheel-Drive Capability
GKN plc says its next-generation electromagnetic coupling system will improve the responsiveness and handling of all-wheel-drive vehicles.
GKN plc says its next-generation electromagnetic coupling system will improve the responsiveness and handling of all-wheel-drive vehicles.
Due to launch in 2018, the new electromagnetic control device can generate 90% of intended torque in less than 100 milliseconds when wheel slip reaches 3 rpm. Drag torque will be limited to less than 7.5 lb-ft across all slip speeds, which GKN says will boost efficiency and enhance traction when accelerating, cornering or driving on low-grip surfaces.
The awd system is designed for SUVs and crossover vehicles with torque outputs as high as 370 lb-ft. GKN introduced its electromechanical coupling system 10 years ago. It produces the third-generation device in Japan and Italy.
