GKN Launches Production of AWD Disconnect System in China

GKN plc’s Shanghai GKN Huayu Driveline Systems (SDS) partner has begun making the supplier’s all-wheel drive disconnect system in China.
Aimed at small- to medium-sized vehicles, the system will debut on the versions of the Jeep Renegade produced for the Chinese market by GAC Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Co. in Guangzhou City. GKN already builds the awd unit at its facilities in Europe and North America, and it supplies the technology for vehicles in India and South America.
The disconnect system automatically switches between two- and all-wheel drive modes based on driver inputs and road conditions. During highway cruising, the clutch system disengages the rear section of the driveline to eliminate rotating losses and improve fuel economy by as much 4% over standard awd, according to GKN. If more traction is required, the awd system can reconnect within 300 milliseconds.
GKN manufactures the complete all-wheel drive system, including the power transfer unit (PTU), rear drive module, propshaft and halfshafts. The company also supplies the software controls.
SDS began making PTUs and rear-drive modules in China in 2015 and added six awd assembly lines and a hypoid gear production line at two of its Shanghai facilities in the last 18 months. GKN says it will launch additional programs with SDS over the next two years for a range of products and manufacturers.
