A 40-foot-wide sinkhole gobbled up eight historic Corvettes this morning at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., Automotive News reports.

The museum says the 30-foot-deep chasm opened up under the floor of the facility's Skydome area at about 5:40 a.m.

The damaged vehicles include:

  • 1962 black Corvette
  • 1984 PPG Pace Car
  • 1992 1-millionth Corvette
  • 1993 40th anniversary Corvette
  • 1993 ZR-1 Spyder
  • 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06
  • 2009 1.5-millionth Corvette
  • 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil

No people were hurt, but the facility is awaiting an assessment from structural engineers to determine when the display area will be safe to enter. The region is known for its caves and sinkholes, the latter of which can form unexpectedly over time.

Museum officials, noting that many of the cars are one-of-a-kind, have not made a damage estimate.
