Nissan Motor Co. says CEO Carlos Ghosn earned 995 million yen ($9.8 million) in the fiscal year ended March 31 and more than 1 billion yen when 93 million yen in dividends are included.
The results are expected to make Ghosn Japan's highest-paid executive for the third time since 2010. That's when Japan began requiring publicly traded companies to report executive compensation.
Ghosn's combined salary and bonus was more than five times that of Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda, whose company earned roughly three times the profit, Bloomberg News notes.
Ghosn told shareholders on Monday he is aware of sensitivity about executive pay. But he also declared that "being in Japan should not be a handicap to attract talent."
