Hyundai Motor Co.’s upscale Genesis brand has formally announced plans to open 100 dealerships in the U.S. this year.

Initially the U.S. network will use temporary and shared facilities, while stand-alone stores will be constructed over the next three years. The 350 Hyundai dealerships that currently sell Genesis models will get the first chance to apply for Genesis franchises.

Genesis, which was launched as a sub-brand two years ago, currently offers the G70, G80 and G90 sedans. Another four models are expected to bow in coming years.

Genesis previously had indicated that Hyundai dealers eager to sell the G90 flagship car would have to build a separate showroom area but could offer the midsize G89 alongside Hyundai cars and SUVs. Moving forward, warranty work likely will be limited to solo Genesis dealerships.

Genesis says having its own dealers for the marque will provide the “ownership experience” expected by luxury buyers. The brand sold 20,600 vehicles last year in the U.S.

The company opened its first stand-alone store earlier this month in Seoul.
