Hyundai Motor Co.’s upscale Genesis unit is evaluating the potential for a production version of the stylish Essentia electric coupe it unveiled at last week’s New York auto show.

Brand chief Manfred Fitzgerald tells Motor Trend that he’s pushing for a production model. The show car will be used to “test the waters,” Fitzgerald says, noting the vehicle hasn’t been approved yet.

If approved, the Essentia could be launched by 2021 or 2022, according to the report. But the production model likely would lose some of the concept’s more exotic features, such as gullwing doors, a transparent hood and blue velvet carpeting.

Genesis described the electric concept as its interpretation of a true 2+2 Gran Turismo car defined by “athletic elegance.” The vehicle is built on a dedicated platform designed for an electric powertrain.

Genesis previously has said it intends to introduce six vehicles on three new platforms by 2021, including a small coupe. The company currently offers the G70, G80 and G90 sedans. The GV80 SUV is due to bow next year.
