Demand for gasoline-fueled passenger vehicles captured 50.2% of the European market in the first half of 2017, surpassing diesels for the first time since 2009, says industry group ACEA.

The group says diesel sales for the period fell by 152,300 units to 3.49 million units. Deliveries of cars with gasoline engines grew by 328,600 vehicles to 3.66 million. All-electric and plug-in hybrid models maintained a 1% market share with sales of 95,400 units.

ACEA says diesels emit significantly less carbon dioxide than gasoline engines and so will remain a “bridge” technology in Europe as carmakers shift to electrified powertrains to achieve future emission limits. The group urges the region to offer stronger incentives and a broader charging infrastructure to coax consumers into making the switch.
