Mazda Motor Corp. is again recalling 69,400 of its 2004-2008 model RX-8 sports cars in the U.S. because a fuel line could leak and cause a fire.
Heat from the engine and exhaust system can crack the main fuel pump pipe and cause the leak, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Mazda plans to begin the recall at the end of July.
The recall follows an earlier campaign that targeted the same issue, but with a different set of repairs. This time dealers will replace the fuel pump filter kit.
Mazda discovered the improperly welded fuel lines in 2007 and spent two years to find an apparent fix for the problem. But late last year it began getting new field reports about fuel leakage in cars in Japan and the U.S., which prompted next month's recall.
