French Militants Hold Goodyear Managers Hostage

The director and the head of human resources for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s unit in France have been taken hostage by the country's militant CGT union.
The union tells Bloomberg News the two executives will be held until the Akron, Ohio-based company agrees to begin "real negotiations" about benefits for nearly 1,200 workers at a tire plant in Amiens-Nord that the U.S. company wants to close.
Goodyear said a year ago it intended to shutter the facility after five years of fruitless talks with the CGT about increasing productivity at the factory. The union has staged sporadic demonstrations against the closure since then, including one in March that resulted in injuries to 19 police officers.
Bloomberg says the union also has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. against Goodyear in Ohio.
