Freescale Semiconductor Inc. says its new integrated tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is half the size of competing systems and, at 0.3 grams, is the lightest option on the market.

Freescale's new family of tire pressure monitors

The new FXTH87 family of TPMSs fits a single- or dual-axis accelerometer, pressure sensor, temperature sensor, radio transmitter, low-frequency receiver and processor with 512 bytes of RAM and 16 KB of flash memory in a package that measures only 7 x 7 x 2.2 millimeters.

Freescale says its system also uses significantly less battery power than competing devices. The company is pricing the tiny TPMS at about $3.50 each for lots of 10,000.
