Ford Motor Co., which currently offers seven SUV/crossover models in the U.S., says it will hike that number to 13 in four years.
One of the new models will be added to the company’s Lincoln brand’s current four-model lineup by 2020, sources tell Reuters.
The other five additions will be sold under the Ford brand, bringing that marque’s SUV total to nine. The newcomers will include the EcoSport subcompact, midsize Bronco and a small battery-powered crossover.
Reuters’ sources say the other two models are likely to be a subcompact crossover that rides on the Ford Fiesta platform and a compact vehicle that shares its platform with the Ford Focus small sedan.
Highly profitable SUV/crossovers have raised their share of the expanding U.S. car market from less than 33% in 2014 to more than 38% last year, according to Autodata Corp. The increase represents more than 900,000 vehicles.
